Swiss chard ‘Vulkan’

Swiss chard ‘Vulkan’, from the seed company Hortinova, is a remarkable variety with its bright red stems and dark green, slightly embossed leaves. Both decorative and productive, it finds its place in vegetable gardens as well as in ornamental borders. Thanks to its rapid growth and tolerance to varied conditions, this Swiss chard is ideal for amateur and professional gardeners.

Spread: 30 to 40 cm
Plant height: 40 to 60 cm
Companion plants: Lettuce, onion, carrot
Enemy plants: Spinach, potato
Latin name: Beta vulgaris

With its tender texture and slightly earthy taste, ‘Vulkan’ is perfect for stir-fries, gratins or fresh salads. Very versatile, this variety is easily grown in full sun or partial shade, in rich, well-drained soil.

For best results, sow seeds directly into the ground as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, or in late summer for a fall harvest. Sow 1 cm deep, spacing plants 10 to 15 cm apart after thinning, and maintain a distance of 30 to 40 cm between rows. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil evenly moist and promote rapid growth.

Harvest the outer leaves as they mature to encourage continued regrowth. The regrowth ability of ‘Vulkan’ allows for extended harvests, ensuring generous production throughout the season. For tender leaves, be sure to cut regularly before they become too large.

Swiss chard ‘Vulkan’, with its vibrant colours and excellent productivity, is an essential choice for combining aesthetics and flavours in your garden.
