VioletProfusionSalvia Care Guide

Overview

• Botanical Name: Salvianemorosa VioletProfusion (USPP31,467)

• Common Name: VioletProfusion Salvia

• Hardiness Zones: 38

• Mature Size: ~1416in (3541cm) tall ~1620in (4151cm) wide

• Flower Colour: Violetblue flower spikes atop rosypurple calyxes

• Features: Fragrant foliage & flowers, attracts bees, butterflies & hummingbirds; deer & rabbit resistant; salt tolerant.

Light & Site Requirements

• Sun: Full sun (6+ hours) is ideal. Tolerates part sun but may perform less vigorously.

• Soil: Welldrained soil is key. Prefers average fertility and adapts to neutral, acidic and alkaline soils.

• Drainage: Avoid heavy, waterlogged sites, especially for winter survival.

Watering & Maintenance

• Watering: During establishment, keep soil moderately moist. Once established, this salvia is relatively drought tolerant but blooms better with occasional moisture.

• Deadheading / Pruning: After peak bloom, cut plants back to basal foliage to encourage a second bloom wave. If plants get leggy, cut deeply into new growth.

• Division: Every 35 years, divide in early spring if clump becomes dense.

• Fertilizing: Light feeding only; rich soil may lead to floppy growth.

ColdClimate / Zone3 Considerations

• Since it’s hardy to Zone3, its a solid option for northern climates including Calgary/Alberta region.

• In prairie settings: choose a sunny, east or southfacing site, with excellent drainage, to ensure winter survival.

• Provide good airflow and avoid sheltered depressions where water may accumulate.

• In early spring, remove any winterdamaged foliage before new growth starts.

Pests & Problems

• Generally pest and disease resistant; proper cultural practices (spacing, drainage) keep plants healthy.

• Potential issues: root/crown rot if overly moist; leggy growth if too much shade or too rich soil.

Landscape Uses & Retail Highlights
